Racism

One of the things I have noticed was that as a Chinese Canadian, was the amount of scorn that arrived just before quarantine hit us.

There were times when K would come home disheartened from going to a grocery store because of the weird and disgusted looks as she picked fruit or times when she is directly told to go “back to where she came from.”

When I visited my family, I was unable to unlock the door to my childhood home because my parents installed a chain lock due to fear of a break in. When talking to my friends in the United States, one told me that they had to stop someone from berating and yelling an Asian woman who was only trying to get her groceries with employees watching on standby.

As heartwarming as it was to hear that my friend stood up for her, there was a concern for my aunt and cousins who lived in the United States as well as my brother who works as a nurse in Detroit.
